What Happens on Tree Removal Day
If you've never had a tree professionally removed, knowing what to expect reduces stress and helps the job go smoothly. Here's the sequence.
Before the Crew Arrives
Clear the work zone. Move vehicles, outdoor furniture, and any moveable objects from the area around the tree. Falling wood and dropped limbs can damage anything within the tree's height radius.
Put pets and children inside. Active tree removal is a controlled environment — but chainsaws, falling wood, heavy equipment, and moving crews create hazards that aren't appropriate for pets and children to navigate around.
Know where utilities are. If there are buried utilities near where equipment will be operating, make sure you've had them marked (Georgia 811 / Sunshine 811 for Florida). The crew will ask or they should already know from the estimate visit.
Leave access available. The crew needs to get equipment to the tree. If there's a gate, leave it open or be there to open it. If the crew discussed using a specific access route during the estimate, make sure that route is clear.
During the Removal
The sequence for most trees:
- Climber ascends the tree, beginning with smaller upper limbs
- Upper canopy is systematically removed, with limbs lowered by rope to the ground crew
- Main trunk sections are cut and lowered or dropped controlled
- Ground crew processes limbs into the chipper
- Main trunk sections handled based on your pre-discussed preferences (leave logs or take them)
- Stump is left at grade unless stump grinding was included
For very large or complex trees, cranes or aerial lifts may be used to lift sections over structures rather than lowering by rope.
What Cleanup Looks Like
A professional crew cleans up completely after themselves:
- All chips are removed or left in a pile at your request
- Major branches and trunk sections handled per prior discussion
- Smaller debris, sawdust, and minor material raked and removed
- Your yard should look like the tree was never there — except for the stump if grinding wasn't included
Communicate preferences ahead: Do you want the chips? Do you want any of the logs? Tell the crew at the start of the day, not after they've loaded the chipper.
After the Crew Leaves
You'll have a stump unless grinding was included. The area around the former tree will likely show some soil disruption, especially if large roots were present. The canopy that was above the removed tree will now be open sky — expect your light and wind patterns in that area to change noticeably.
If you want to replant the area, wait until the stump is ground and the major surface roots are cleared.
