South Tallahassee's Tree Character
South Tallahassee — the residential areas south of I-10 and Tennessee Street, extending through Killearn, Summerbrooke, Southwood, and the communities along Apalachee Parkway and US-27 — has a distinctive residential character: newer development in the 1990s-2010s mixed with older neighborhoods, with significant tree canopy throughout.
The tree makeup here is somewhat different from the historic northside neighborhoods:
Live oaks are present throughout but the southside has more mixed-canopy neighborhoods with live oaks combined with planted pines and other species.
Slash and loblolly pine are common throughout south Tallahassee's residential areas — both planted intentionally and naturally established on lots carved from pine habitat.
Water oaks throughout the area's residential canopy — fast-planted for quick shade, now reaching the age where structural issues develop.
Crape myrtle widely planted as residential landscape trees.
Common Tree Service Needs in This Area
Pine management: Residential pines that have grown to 60-80 feet over houses and driveways are among the most common removal requests in south Tallahassee. Assessment of whether a pine is healthy and stable vs. declining is worth doing before it becomes an emergency.
Water oak assessment and removal: Many water oaks planted in the 1990s development boom are now 30+ years old and approaching the end of their structural lifespan. Internal decay assessment is valuable at this stage.
Live oak maintenance: Pre-storm season crown cleaning and dead wood removal for live oaks over structures.
