When a tree is blocking your driveway, a limb just came down on your fence, or a storm left you with a situation you need resolved before tomorrow morning, the first question is always: can someone get here today?
Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. The answer depends on several things, and if you understand them before you call, you will save time and get a clearer answer faster.
Here is how it actually works.
When Same-Day Tree Removal Is Realistic in Tallahassee
True emergencies. A fallen tree on a structure, a tree that came down across a driveway blocking access, a large limb through a fence, a tree leaning against a building after a storm, these get priority. Most professional tree service companies, including Reed Tree Service, maintain some emergency availability specifically for situations where waiting until next week is not an option. Smaller trees in accessible locations. A 20-foot ornamental tree in an open front yard with clear truck access is a very different job than a 70-foot water oak over a pool in a fenced back yard. The smaller, more accessible job can often be added to a crew's day without significant equipment changes or setup time. If your job fits this profile, same-day is frequently possible when crew availability allows.
Single-tree jobs with no complex rigging. When there is nothing in the drop zone that needs to be protected (no roof, no fence, no utility lines, no neighboring structure) a crew can move quickly without the overhead of setting up extensive rigging.
Off-peak periods. January and February in Tallahassee are slower for the tree industry. Spring and summer, especially after named storms, are the opposite. The same company that can be at your property within hours in January may have a three-day backlog in July after a thunderstorm rolls through and drops trees across 40 properties in one night.
When Same-Day Is Not Going to Happen
Crane jobs. A removal that requires a crane requires scheduling the crane, confirming availability, and coordinating the equipment with the crew. Even in emergency scenarios, a same-day crane job is the exception rather than the rule. If your tree is over a house, over a pool, or in a position where no standard rigging can clear the obstacle, you are probably looking at a scheduled appointment, not a same-day response.
Permit-required removals. Tallahassee and Leon County have tree protection ordinances that require permits for removing certain trees (primarily live oaks above a specified diameter). If a permit is required for your tree, the city review process adds time that cannot be compressed. This is not something any tree company can speed up by showing up faster.
Heavily scheduled periods. After a major storm event, every crew in the area is working through a backlog. Calling the day after a significant storm and expecting same-day service is usually not realistic. If your situation is a genuine emergency, say so clearly when you call, that affects prioritization.
Complex rigging situations. A large tree with a neighbor's fence, a power line, and a roof all within the fall zone requires setup time. Rushing a complex rigging job is how property damage and injuries happen. A reputable crew will not cut corners on rigging to meet a timeline.
What Actually Determines Response Time
When you call a tree service and ask about availability, three things determine the answer:
Crew availability. Tree companies run crews, a foreman plus one or two additional climbers and ground workers. If all crews are already committed to jobs that day, there is no same-day availability regardless of how urgent your situation is. Larger companies with more crews have more flexibility. A one-person operation may have none.
Equipment match. The crew that is available on a given day has to have the right equipment for your job. A crew with a bucket truck cannot do a job that requires a crane. If the right equipment is booked, your job waits.
Distance and routing. A company that is already working in your neighborhood can potentially swing by at the end of the day. A company whose nearest crew is 45 minutes away has less flexibility to add a stop.
What to Do to Get the Fastest Possible Service
When you call, be specific. These details help a dispatcher know whether same-day is feasible before a crew drives to your property:
- How big is the tree (approximate height, approximate trunk diameter)?
- Is it fallen, leaning, or standing?
- Is it on or near a structure, fence, vehicle, or utility line?
- Is there truck access to the area?
- Is this blocking something that makes delay genuinely dangerous or impossible (driveway, entrance, utility)?
The more clearly you can describe the situation, the faster a company can tell you whether they can help today or schedule you for the earliest available slot.
